Today,
the Human Rights Defender Mr. Arman Tatoyan received a delegation headed by the
European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in
Georgia Mr. Toivo Klaar. The Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, EU
Ambassador, Mrs. Andrea Wiktorin also attended the meeting.
During
the meeting, Arman Tatoyan raised the issue of the urgent return of the
Armenian prisoners of war, the military servicemen and the civilians held in
Azerbaijan. The Defender noted, that the Azerbaijani authorities are
artificially delaying and politicizing the process in order to cause mental
suffering to the Armenian society and especially to the families of the
captives and tension in the country.
The
Defender presented gross human rights issues in the post-war period, which
arose due to the border determination process conducted at an impermissible
speed and under the obvious threats of war by Azerbaijan against the Armenian population.
Arman
Tatoyan emphasized, that not only the hatred towards Armenians and the
incitement to hostility in Azerbaijan did not stop, but have been further
developed.
During
the meeting, the Defender highlighted the cooperation with the EU Delegation to
Armenia and, in particular, emphasized the joint work within the Human Rights
Dialogue and a number of other projects. The Defender reaffirmed his commitment
to joint work aimed at strengthening the human rights protection in Armenia
with the support of the EU.
In
its turn, the EU Delegation underlined the role of the Human Rights Defender of
Armenia in human rights protection issues and the importance of the cooperation
with the Defender.
