The Human Rights Defender of
Armenia has started, on his own initiative, a discussion procedure on the
situation in High School No.1 after Khachatur Abovyan in Abovyan, Kotayk
region, in connection with the process of electing the principal and its impact
on the right to education.
From February 3 to 5, 2021 by
monitoring of mass media and social networks, the Office of the Human Rights
Defender of Armenia recorded that the teachers and pupils of High School No. 1 after
Khachatur Abovyan went on strike.
The results of the monitoring
show that the situation is related to allegations that the principal was
elected illegally or unfairly. In addition, it turned out that the normal
course of classes had been disrupted at the school. Moreover, cases of the
principal arriving at school accompanied by police officers were also observed.
Therefore,
taking into account the above mentioned information, a proceeding has been
initiated by the decision of the Human Rights Defender and clarifications were
requested from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, and from
the Police.
