The Human Rights Defender has received
complaints from university applicants and their parents in connection with
admission to higher education institutions.
The applicants and their parents
expressed their concerns over the results of the entrance exams for state and
non-state higher education institutions of 2020-2021 academic year.
Specifically, in case of receiving "12.0" - "18.75" points,
their children (university applicants) were not admitted, since the points were
not enough for admission to the university mentioned in their first application
or they were admitted to any of the universities mentioned in the 8th
application. However, at the same time, some applicants who received
"7.5" points were admitted to the universities mentioned in their 2nd
to 5th applications.
The citizens, in their complaints, have
suggested that the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of
Armenia increase the number of places in universities so applicants with high
grades can study at the university of their choice. Another option was proposed
to give the applicants an opportunity to be admitted to the university to study
the first semester of the 2020 academic year, and, later on define the issue of
their further education on a competitive basis, according to knowledge.
The Human Rights Defender made a
decision on accepting the complaints for consideration and addressed a
corresponding letter to the RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture and
Sports.
