Mr.
Arkadya Gevorgyan, the lawyer of Mr. Miasnik Lazaryan, who is arrested in
Armenia and searched by the law enforcement authorities of the Russian
Federation, applied to me yesterday. A number of National Assembly deputies
also applied to me.
The
lawyer raised both the issue of non-extradition of Miasnik Lazaryan, and the
issue of granting him asylum.
The
Human Rights Defender was informed that the General Prosecutor’s Office had not
yet made a decision regarding the extradition and that the issue was in the process
of consideration.
Upon
the Defender’s decision, a discussion procedure will be initiated tomorrow, official
letters for receiving clarifications and necessary information on the issues of
extradition and asylum will be sent to relevant bodies, and measures envisaged by law will be undertaken.
As
the lawyer informed that M. Lazaryan had gone on a hunger strike, the issue
will also be under the attention of the Defender’s Office.
