Unit for
Protection of Rights of Persons with Disabilities is established at the Human
Rights Defender’s Office. The Unit will ensure the protection of rights and
freedoms of persons with disabilities violated by the state and local
self-governing bodies, will conduct unannounced visits, as well as the monitoring
of implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
The
Unit, that will operate within the Department for Protection of Civil,
Social-Economical and Cultural Rights, will closely cooperate with
non-governmental organizations, the media and other representatives of civil
society to promote equal rights and opportunities. In this regard, the Human
Rights Defender particularly values the respect for inherent dignity of persons
with disabilities, their individual autonomy and independence and participation
in decision–making processes, as well as the ensuring of the right to living
independently and being included in the community by the state and local
self-governing bodies and public authorities.
To
remind, the Human Rights Defender is vested with the mandate to conduct
monitoring of the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the
Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as well as to carry out prevention of
violations of the rights of the persons with disabilities and the protection
thereof.
