The
Human Rights Defender of Armenia Arman Tatoyan signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Armenian Bar Association and the California’s Southwestern
Law School. The Memorandum is aimed at enhancing the effective cooperation in
the field of legal education and the protection of human rights, as well as to
contribute to the capacity building of the Defender’s Office.
Namely,
the Memorandum provides to the Human Rights Defender’s Office of Armenia full
scholarships for Southwestern’s LL.M. Program, enrollment in various courses,
as well as hosts visiting scholars interested in advancing their scholarship
and professional development
“Invaluable legal advice and knowledge
received from prominent lawyers of the Armenian Bar Association and the
professors of the Southwestern Law School will firmly contribute to the
enrichment of the human rights system of Armenia and build the capacities of
the National Human Rights Constitutional Institution of Armenia. In its turn,
this will produce results that make us more competitive in the international
arena.”, said the Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan.
The
decision on signing the Memorandum was reached during the meeting with the Dean
of Southwestern Law School Susan Prager, Vice Dean Dov Waisman and famous
American Professor with Armenian origins Anahid Gharakhanian. Gerard Kassabian
and Lucy Varpetian, respectively Chair and Co-Chair of the Armenian Bar Association
played a key role in facilitating to the signing of the Memorandum.
The
Human Rights Defender highly valued the role of former Co-Chair of Armenian Bar
Association Garo Ghazarian and the acting Co-Chair Karnig Kerkonian in the
established effective cooperation with the Armenian Bar Association and USA
Universities.
As a
reminder, the agreement on sighing the Memorandum was reached back in summer,
during the visit of the Human Rights Defender to USA.
