Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan sent a congratulatory message on the
occasion of Armenian Press Day. The message particularly emphasizes:
“Dear
mass media representatives,
I
congratulate you on the occasion of the Armenian Press Day.
Freedom
of speech and journalistic activities serve as fundamental basis the country's
democratic development.
You perform
an invaluable job in guaranteeing the right to receive information and in
promoting dissidence.
It is
mainly due to your work that citizens get a comprehensive overview of the work performed by public bodies and
officials. This is how the civil oversight over the state is guaranteed.
An
atmosphere should be created in the country in order for journalists feel
protected from any violations against their professional activities.
At the
same time, the realization of freedom of speech implies responsible journalism
as well. From the perspective of journalistic activities, responsible
journalism means a high professional and due diligent work guided by the well-known
principles of journalism.
Let
the fundamental principle of "do no harm" always be a priority for your
work as you perform an important public mission and contribute to the
development of democracy.”
