Today, the Human Rights Defender’s Office participated in a
lecture delivered by Armenian Bar Association’s Armenian Rights Watch Committee
Co-Chairs Garo Ghazarian and Karnig Kerkonian.
During his opening remarks, the Human Rights Defender highlighted
the efforts of Garo Ghazarian and Karnig Kerkonian in protecting rights of
Armenians worldwide.
They are famous attorneys in America, who also pay particular
attention to the human rights situation in Armenia and support us in our human
rights protection efforts.
Garo Ghazarian presented the specific features of the work of
criminal lawyers in the United States, the rights of individuals deprived of
liberty, as well as responsibilities of law enforcement bodies.
Specific examples from the American law enforcement practices
were discussed and compared to cases of arrest and detention in Armenia.
Karnig Kerkonian elaborated in
detail on the rules of proper legal analysis, requirements for the use of facts
and rules in those analyzes.
The principles of presenting
documents to the court in the U.S. were discussed, as well as the principles of
making a complaint by a lawyer.
At the
end of the meeting, discussions were held on the human rights issues recorded
by the Human Rights Defender in comparison to the American experience.
