Mr.
Aram Minasyan, Head of the Department for the Protection of Rights in the
Criminal Justice and in the Armed Forces of the Human Rights Defender’s Office
of the Republic of Armenia, participated in a study visit to Geneva
(Switzerland) on the topic “Fostering Security Sector Governance and Oversight
in Armenia” from December 8 to 12.
The
study visit brought together representatives of state administration bodies,
law enforcement agencies, parliamentary committees, international
organizations, and civil society, as well as local and international experts.
The
representative of the Human Rights Defender delivered a keynote speech.
Issues
related to the protection of human rights in the armed forces were presented,
as well as the importance of the Ombudsman (Human Rights Defender) institution
in this field and the institutional strengthening of the human rights
protection system within the armed forces.
The
discussions focused on issues of particular relevance to the ongoing security
sector reforms in Armenia, based on lessons learned from the experiences of
selected countries.
The
event was organized in the frame of the DCAF’s assistance program in Armenia
with financial support provided by Governments of Germany and France.
