On December 11, human rights experts who arrived in
Armenia to participate in the high-level international conference dedicated to
International Human Rights Day — Mr. Valentin Roșca, Deputy Ombudsperson of the
Republic of Moldova, Mr. Sasa Jankovic, Former National Ombudsman of the
Republic of Serbia, human rights expert and Ms. Anne Marie Thake, Associate
Professor, University of Malta — visited Yerevan State University (YSU),
accompanied by the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan, and the UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, Ms. Natia
Natsvlishvili. During the visit, they met with students and academic staff.
The visit began with a meeting with YSU Rector Mr.
Hovhannes Hovhannisyan.
He presented to the guests the history of the university,
ongoing activities, as well as the upcoming development programs.
During the meeting with the students, Ms. Anahit Manasyan
emphasized the importance of human rights education, noting that without proper
education on human rights, an effective system of human rights protection
cannot exist.
The speakers presented to the students the specific
features of human rights protection systems in their respective countries, the
challenges faced in the field, and effective tools for overcoming them.
During the discussion, the speakers answered the
students' questions, presenting the main mechanisms, international and national
tools for human rights protection.
The visit was organized at the initiative of the Human
Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia within the framework of the European
Union funded “ATHENA: Advancing the Human Rights Agenda and Enhancing National
Authorities” project, implemented in partnership with the United Nations
Development Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the United
Nations Population Fund.
