On July 8, an online working discussion was held in the
Human Rights Defender’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, under the leadership
of Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, on the results of the
preliminary assessment of the Defender's institution in the context of the
introduction of the Gender Equality Seal (GES).
The process of introducing the seal for public
institutions by the Human Rights Defender’s Office was launched on April 9,
2024, marking its first official implementation in the Republic of Armenia. It
is important to emphasize that the Human Rights Defender’s Office is the first
national human rights protection body to undergo an assessment for the
introduction of the seal.
During the meeting, the results of the preliminary
assessment of the Human Rights Defender’s Office and the joint work carried out in the context
of the process of introducing the GES were summarized and presented, as well as
the strategic directions of the GES as well as the action plan to be
implemented in the near future.
Welcoming the participants, Ms. Anahit Manasyan
emphasized that the protection of women's rights and the elimination of all
forms of discrimination against women are important areas of the activity of
the Human Rights Defender. In this context, she noted that it is necessary to
identify existing problems with joint efforts in order to find quick solutions
and move forward.
The discussion was attended by Ms. Zhanna Harutyunyan,
UNDP Gender Equality Portfolio Manager, Ms. Damaris Rosabal, UNDP Gender
Expert, as well as representatives of the Human Rights Defender’s Office.
The GES is a specially developed methodology aimed at
supporting state bodies in enshrining the provisions of the 2030 UN Sustainable
Development Goal 5 on gender equality in domestic legal acts, adopting
gender-sensitive approaches in the implementation of their powers. The main
goal of all this is to promote equality between women and men through improving
the state system.
The GES is funded by the Good Governance Foundation of
the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the framework of
the UNDP Women in Politics, Public Administration and Civil Society programme.
