By
the instruction of the Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, on June 19,
the representatives of the Human Rights Defender’s Office visited the “Armavir”
Penitentiary Institution of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia
and had a confidential private interview with Mr. Samvel Karapetyan.
The
Human Rights Defender initiated an investigation procedure on June 18 on her
own initiative into the issues related to the charges brought against Mr. S.
Karapetyan, including those raised by lawyers, as well as the alerts received
by the hotline of the Human Rights Defender’s Office (regarding the detention
of more than 40 arrested persons beyond the period prescribed by law and the
transfer of a number of vehicles to a special Police area). On the same day,
clarifications were requested from the competent state bodies.
The
above issues are under the direct attention of the Human Rights Defender. The
Staff of the Human Rights Defender is in contact with Mr. S. Karapetyan's
lawyers.
