As a
result of the monitoring of the HRDO staff, a case was recorded involving
police officer apparently obstructing the professional activities of journalist
Ms. Mary Manukyan and using violence against her.
The
Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Ms. Anahit Manasyan strongly
condemns such behavior of the police officer, violence against the journalist
and emphasizes that journalists must be guaranteed a proper environment to
carry out their professional activities. The Defender demands that the
competent authorities conduct a proper investigation into the mentioned case.
It
should also be noted that, by the instruction of the Human Rights Defender, on
June 16 the rapid response group of the HRDO staff left for the Ashtarak
Division of the Aragatsotn Regional Department of the Ministry of Internal
Affairs Police of the Republic of Armenia in the framework of the case of
detaining citizens during a protest in Kasakh.
Private
interviews will be held with the detainees, the grounds for detaining them and
the state of ensuring their rights, as well as the documents prepared by the
Police in this regard, will be examined.
Regarding
the issues related to the rights of protest participants and the case of
apparent obstruction of the journalist’s professional activity, the Defender
will request clarifications from the competent state authorities.
