On
April 3, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan hosted students of the “Article 3” Human Rights School.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan presented to the participants the mandate of the Human Rights
Defender, the institution’s key priorities, and the global challenges currently
faced in the field of human rights protection.
In
her speech, she noted that the Human Rights Defender’ Office isn’t a political
body and must operate strictly within the scope of its legal mandate, without
any political influence.
The
Defender also emphasized the importance of the methodology of the activities of
the Human Rights Defender institutions and its key nature from the point of
view of the activities of the mentioned bodies.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan also touched upon the existing problems in the sphere of
equality and anti-discrimination and emphasized that every member of society
should feel fully protected and benefit from the guarantees of human rights
protection.
During
the meeting, the students had the opportunity to discuss issues of concern for
them with the Defender in a Q&A format, in particular, mechanisms for
ensuring the protection of human rights in closed institutions, the protection
of children's rights and the prevention of violence, the protection of labor
rights, the protection of human rights in border settlements, the assessment of
the Defender’s institution by the UN, the role and advantages of the
highest-level 'A' status, as well as the toolkit related to the Defender's
mandate, guarantees of independence, and other core issues.
"These
kinds of meetings are extremely important to me. They contribute not only to
identifying existing problems in the field, their joint discussion and
outlining ways to solve them, but also to the development of human rights
education. I hope that after this meeting your commitment to improving the
field will increase," concluded the Human Rights Defender.
