The Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Ms.
Anahit Manasyan and a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of
Armenia Ms. Hasmik Hakobyan made a joint visit to the “Abovyan” Penitentiary
Institution.
Representatives of the Human Rights Defender’s Office
also took part in the visit.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan and Ms. Hasmik Hakobyan accompanied
by the head of the institution, Ms. Heghine Martirosyan toured the facility and
examined the detention conditions of women and minors deprived of their
liberty.
Then, a confidential meeting was held with women detained
in the institution, including foreign nationals. The goal was to collect the
problems raised by them.
Persons deprived of their liberty, among others, raised
issues related to the possibility of changing the type of security zone,
conditional early release from serving a sentence, the right to health
protection, legal assistance provided by the Public Defender’s Office, the
duration of calls, the frequency of visits, and a number of other issues.
The problems raised by persons deprived of their liberty
will be analyzed in detail by the Defender, and appropriate proposals will be
submitted to the competent authorities.
