On
March 11-12, in Geneva, the Secretary General of the Human Rights Defender’s
Office of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, participated in the
General Assembly of GANHRI as well as an international Annual Conference
dedicated to the rights of women and girls and the promotion of gender
equality.
Within
the framework of the General Assembly, national human rights institutions that
are members of the global alliance, held experience-sharing discussions on
their practices and challenges in ensuring the rights of persons with
disabilities, as well as the role and experience of national human rights
institutions in the accreditation process.
The
Secretary General of the Human Rights Defender’s Office of the Republic of
Armenia, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, presented the experience of the Armenian
Ombudsman's institution to her colleagues, referring to the report submitted by
the Human Rights Defender to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
within the framework of monitoring the implementation of the provisions of the
UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the systemic problems
in the sector, and the steps outlined to address them.
The
Secretary General, among other things, also emphasized the importance of
effective participation and being heard by persons with disabilities in the
process of developing strategic documents and policies related to their rights.
From this perspective, the active involvement of the Public Council for the
Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adjunct to the Human
Rights Defender was presented as a positive experience.
Referring
to the accreditation process, Ms. Nina Pirumyan emphasized that it is a
comprehensive process of objective self-assessment for national human rights
institutions, while at the same time serving as a advocacy tool aimed at
strengthening the legislative guarantees for the functioning of national
institutions at the domestic level, as well as ensuring adequate human,
technical and financial resources. In this regard, the Secretary General also
shared with the partners of the global alliance the positive experience of the Armenian
ombudsman institution.
Within
the framework of the conference dedicated to the rights of women and girls and
the promotion of gender equality, the Secretary General addressed the
challenges in the field, particularly the importance of shaping public
perceptions and human rights education to ensure the full realization of
women’s roles and potential in public and political life.
Reference
was also made to the protection of the rights of women actively involved in
public life, taking into account the fact that women who speak out on sensitive
human rights issues and have a public role are most often targeted and
subjected to hate speech, including online.
The
Secretary General next referred to the process of introducing the Gender
Equality Seal Awards in cooperation with UNDP within the Human Rights
Defender's staff, as a specially developed methodology aimed at embedding
gender-sensitive approaches.
At
the end of the international conference, the national human rights institutions
that are members of the global alliance issued a joint statement dedicated to
the rights of women and girls and the promotion of gender equality.
