The closing event of the first Human Rights Winter School
program took place on March 1-2 in Tsaghkadzor.
The Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Ms.
Anahit Manasyan welcomed the law students selected through a competitive
process from various universities across Armenia. Speakers also included Mr.
Yeghisheh Kirakosyan, Representative for International Legal Issues of the
Republic of Armenia, human rights defender Ms. Siranush Sahakyan and Judge of
the Constitutional Court Mr. Edgar Shatiryan.
“Dear participants of the Human Rights Winter School,
throughout the program, you have had the opportunity to visit various state
institutions, engage in insightful discussions with high-ranking officials and
leading experts in the field, and participate in numerous discussions on human
rights. I have personally followed the process and I can proudly state that our
first Human Rights Winter School has been a success. We conclude it with new
ideas for the program’s continuation. I am confident that the knowledge you
have gained over these two weeks will serve you well in your professional
journey. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Representatives of
the Human Rights Defender’s Office and our partner, the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) Armenia Office, for their commitment to ensuring
the program’s successful implementation,” stated Ms. Anahit Manasyan in her
opening remarks.
During the two-day event, the following topics were
presented to the students:️
• mechanisms and developments in the implementation of
human rights,
• the role, mechanisms, and effectiveness of the UN Human
Rights Council,
• the impact of Constitutional Court rulings on the human
rights protection system, including the individual constitutional complaint
mechanism in Armenia,
• the European human
rights system (European Court of Human Rights): judicial monitoring as a
guarantee of the right to a fair trial.
As part of the event, Ms. Anahit Manasyan discussed the
mission of the Human Rights Defender’s Office, highlighting its achievements
and challenges.
UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, Ms. Natia
Natsvlishvili, highly appreciated this initiative. “Building a strong human
rights culture requires a comprehensive approach, with education at its core.
It is particularly significant that this initiative was carried out under the
auspices of the Human Rights Defender. I am confident that the practical
knowledge and skills gained during the Human Rights Winter School will enable
young people to take an active role in human rights protection.”
The event concluded with a Q&A session on sectoral
topics, followed by Ms. Anahit Manasyan awarding certificates to the students.
“This school
provided a fantastic opportunity, and I am truly grateful to have participated.
When I return to Vanadzor, I plan to share the knowledge I have gained with my
university students," said Ms. Nane Ghochikyan, a student.
