The
Secretary General of the Human Rights Defender’s Office of the Republic of
Armenia, Ms. Nina Pirumyan, participated in the Armenia-EU 14th Human Rights
Dialogue.
During
the meeting, the Secretary General of the Human Rights Defender’s Office
highlighted several human rights issues, drawing the attention of EU partners
to the importance of adopting comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation. In
this context, she also emphasized the necessity of human, financial, and
technical resources for the activities of the Human Rights Defender as the
equality body.
In
her speech, Ms. Nina Pirumyan noted that the Global Alliance of National Human
Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) had
underlined the importance of securing the necessary resources, as a result of
accreditation in 2024, awarding the Human Rights Defender's Institute of
Armenia the highest-level 'A' status for its credibility and independence.
Additionally,
Ms. Pirumyan addressed the issue of increasing tax burden on legal service
providers, emphasizing the Defender’s ongoing discussions with the legal
community and civil society representatives, as well as the steps taken in
response.
She
also referred to the reports of the Human Rights Defender concerning the
situation of the state’s fulfillment of its obligations in the spheres of the
protection of the rights of children and persons with disabilities under relevant
UN conventions, the situation of the implementation of the 2023 report of the
European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) on Armenia, as well as several
human rights issues in the armed forces.
These
topics will remain under continuous review in future sessions of the Armenia-EU
Human Rights Dialogue.
