On
February 21, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan, welcomed students from the Yerevan Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State
University. The meeting was also attended by Associate Professor of the
Department of Constitutional and Municipal Law of the Law Faculty of Moscow
State University, PhD in Law Ms. Elena Markova.
Welcoming
the guests, the Defender presented the mission, directions and priorities of
the Human Rights Defender’s Office as well as outlining her mandate and
cooperation with state bodies, civil society organizations, and international
organisations. She emphasized that the Defender’s Office is an independent,
apolitical institution dedicated to the protection of human rights,
particularly in cases involving violations by state and local self-government
bodies, as well as the promotion of human rights, including through human
rights education. Ms. Anahit Manasyan also underlined the existence of clear
international standards for the work of National Human Rights Institutions
(NHRIs), noting that the violation of which can lead to various consequences.
"This
is exactly the role of NHRIs worldwide. It is crucial for all of us to fully
understand and embrace this methodology. This is also essential from the
perspective of credible and effective work in the international
platforms," stated Ms. Manasyan.
During
a Q&A session, students had the opportunity to address their questions to
the Defender, particularly: the mechanisms available to the Human Rights
Defender, guarantees of independence, labor rights, reproductive health and
reproductive rights, procedures for applying to the Constitutional Court, and
various other topics.
At
the end of the meeting, Ms. Anahit Manasyan expressed her gratitude for the
active discussion, emphasizing that she highly values meetings of this format
for experience exchange, identifying existing challenges in human rights
protection, and finding joint solutions.
