On
January 14, Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan visited the Ministry of
Justice’s "Sevan" Penitentiary Institution.
Accompanied
by the institution's head, Artak Ghazaryan, and representatives of the Human
Rights Defender's Office, Anahit Manasyan toured the premises, visited living
quarters, and examined the conditions under which individuals are held in the
penitentiary.
Following
the tour, the Human Rights Defender and her representatives held individual
meetings with detainees, including foreign nationals, individuals serving life
sentences, and those on hunger strike. During these meetings, detainees
presented their concerns.
Among
other issues, detainees raised questions about conditional early release, the
possibility of transferring to a safer zone, healthcare, the right to
education, employment-related matters, and a range of other problems.
The
Human Rights Defender consistently prioritizes ensuring rights within places of
detention. Issues identified during visits are thoroughly analyzed by the
Defender, and relevant recommendations are submitted to competent authorities
to improve the system.
The
visits of the Human Rights Defender to penitentiary institutions are ongoing.
