On December 16, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan
visited the "Mkhitar Sebastatsi" Educational Complex and delivered a
lecture for the students of the Senior School-Research school.
In her remarks, the Defender emphasized the importance of
holding such meetings with the students of the school to enhance human rights
education. She discussed several issues related to the priorities of human
rights protection with the high school students and presented the best local
and international practices in the field.
"As the Human Rights Defender, I value not only
working for people but also working with people. Human rights are about life.
They were created to ensure that individuals can feel dignified and protected.
It is the state's obligation to establish mechanisms that guarantee the
protection of human rights and to consistently develop these mechanisms based
on the rule of law and human-centered values," the Defender stated.
Anahit Manasyan also elaborated on her areas of activity
and the scope of her mandate, stating that people sometimes misunderstand the
mandate of the Human Rights Defender: "I try to interact with people as
much as possible and explain the scope of the Human Rights Defender's powers
because there is a misconception that everything is within the Defender's
mandate."
During the meeting, held in a Q&A format, the
Defender discussed principles of equality before the law, the elimination of
discrimination, common violations of professional ethics by lawyers and human
rights advocates, and the inadmissibility of such violations.
The activities of the Public Council for the Protection
of Children's Rights, operating under the Human Rights Defender's Office, were
also addressed.
In conclusion, Anahit Manasyan underscored the importance
of combining everyone’s efforts and making positive changes in one’s own
environment to overcome the challenges present in the field of human rights
protection.
