On September 19, the representatives of the
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Mr. Philipp Meissner,
Inter-regional Advisor of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section of
UNODC, and expert Ms.Vera Tkachenko, were hosted at the Human Rights Defender's
Office.
The representatives of the United Nations Office
on Drugs and Crime are in Armenia to conduct a needs assessment mission in the
field of penitentiary and prison reforms.
The meeting was attended by Ms. Laura Gasparyan,
Coordinator of the National Preventive Mechanism Implementation - Head of
Department for Prevention of Torture and Ill-Treatment, Ms. Seda Stepanyan,
Deputy Head of Division for Protection of Rights in Criminal Justice, and Mr.
Shant Abou Cham, Deputy Head of the International Cooperation Department.
The problems of persons deprived of liberty in
Armenia were presented to the guests.
The interlocutors touched upon issues related to
ensuring the rights of persons deprived of liberty, including women, minors,
and persons with disabilities.
Issues related to the proper provision of food,
medical care and legal services in the temporary detention cells of persons
deprived of liberty in the courts were discussed.
The Defender's representatives noted that the
above-mentioned problems need an urgent solution for the effective protection
of the rights of persons deprived of liberty.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the guests
expressed their gratitude for the reception and for the meaningful discussion.
