On September 1, Human Rights Defender Anahit
Manasyan, participated in an international conference "Access to services
for people with disabilities/exchange of experience". The purpose of the
event was to unite all organizations providing services to persons with
disabilities, competent state authorities, as well as international
organizations, to identify problems, present state initiatives and programs,
study the international experience, knowledge and professional tools and make
them applicable in Armenia.
"Guaranteeing of inclusiveness is one of the
key elements of ensuring the rights of people with disabilities. Despite the
commitment of the state, the steps taken by the latter and the developments of
recent years, there are still many problems in this area. We should be able to
see them and try to find quick and professional solutions for the latter",
- stated the Defender in her speech.
Anahit Manasyan especially emphasized that the
environment is generally not accessible to people with different peculiarities.
In this framework, she emphasized that the accessibility is one of the most
important preconditions for an independent life. The Defender also touched the
various problems related to accessibility in education, including regarding the
provision of appropriate manuals in Braille format. The need to provide sign
language translation in educational institutions and the existing problems in
this regard were also highlighted. The Defender also addressed various issues
related to accessibility in the education sector, including the provision of
relevant materials in Braille.
The necessity of providing sign language
interpretation in educational institutions and the existing challenges in this
regard were also emphasized. Among other issues, the accessibility of banking
services, as well as digital services, including website accessibility and the
accessibility of the healthcare system, were also addressed. In conclusion,
Anahit Manasyan stated that the issues must be identified and urgent, effective
solutions must be found for them. During the conference, a number of thematic
panel discussions took place.
The international conference "Access to
services for people with disabilities/exchange of experience" was held at
the initiative of the 'My Step' Charitable Foundation in partnership with the
Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
