The
Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan's message on the occasion of the
International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances։
August
30 marks the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
The
enforced disappearance of individuals constitutes a violation of multiple
rights enshrined in international legal documents.
Regrettably,
the ongoing armed conflicts across the globe continue to perpetuate enforced
disappearances, causing suffering not only to the victims themselves but also
to their families.
Ensuring
the protection of the rights of forcibly disappeared persons and their families
remains a matter of critical importance for us.
The
issue of guaranteeing the rights of forcibly disappeared persons and their
family members continues to be topical for us.
Over
the years, the Office of the Human Rights Defender has documented and presented
to various international actors the gross violations committed by Azerbaijani
authorities against ethnic Armenians, including from the perspective of the
rights violations of forcibly disappeared persons and their families.
As
the Human Rights Defender, the protection of the rights of missing persons and
their families is a priority in my work.
My
team and I regularly engage with the relatives of missing persons, presenting
their challenges to international actors and relevant domestic authorities
through various channels.
In
this context, the Human Rights Defender reiterates that the state bears the responsibility
to enforce the provisions of international law and to continue its efforts to
determine the fate of all missing persons, while ensuring the rights of their
families are upheld.
