On August 9, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan visited Gegharkunik region. Anahit Manasyan had a meeting in Gavar with Karen Sargsyan, the Head of Regional administration of Gegharkunik region.
Human rights issues in the region, as well as socio-economic issues, were discussed. Anahit Manasyan made a special reference to a number of issues related to the rights of residents of border settlements, which are related to water supply, provision of medical care, access to public transport. Inter alia, protection of children's rights and women's employment were also touched upon.
The Defender expressed confidence that thanks to joint efforts, the region should continuously improve the systems that affect the lives of people.
Anahit Manasyan made an opening speech at the discussion on "Protection and promotion of women's rights in the field of business" organized by the staff of the Defender, in which more than 40 women engaged in various activities in the business sector of the region participated, including representatives of non-governmental organizations and forcibly displaced persons.
Welcoming the participants, Anahit Manasyan stated that the protection of rights in the field of business is one of the important directions of her activity. For this purpose, the Unit of Rights Protection in the Field of Business operates in the Defender's office.
In the framework of the discussion, Anahit Manasyan emphasized the importance of guaranteeing equality of rights, the need to overcome existing stereotypes.
"Each of us, following our example, should contribute to the creation of a harmonious public environment, strengthening of women's opportunities and promotion of their rights," stated the Defender.
The participants of the discussion presented the challenges faced in the field of business, as well as made suggestions.
A special reference was made to the protection of the rights of forcibly displaced persons and the work carried out by the Defender in that direction.
Ellada Hakobyan, the head of the Unit for the Protection of Rights in the Field of Business, also presented the functions and goals of the unit, as well as the procedure for applying to the Defender.
Anahit Manasyan also had a meeting with the students and teaching staff of "Gavar High School".
The Human Rights Defender emphasized that through such meetings, it is possible to hear from the children the issues that concern them and to personally present the work carried out by the Human Rights Defender in the direction of protecting children's rights.
The powers of the Defender in the field of protection of children's rights, the activities of the Public Council on the Rights of Children and Youth adjunct to the Human Rights Defender were presented to the schoolchildren.
A number of issues related to the protection of human rights, the fight against bullying, intolerance and discrimination were addressed.
At the end of the meeting, Anahit Manasyan expressed her gratitude for the interesting discussion and expressed her willingness to host the schoolchildren in the Defender's office.
As part of the visit, Anahit Manasyan, accompanied by staff representatives, also visited the Gegharkunik regional subdivision of the Defender's Office.
A number of work issues were discussed, including the improvement of the working methodology of the regional subdivision.
The Human Rights Defender's regional visits are of ongoing nature in order to get acquainted with the problems related to human rights in the republic.
