The
Human Rights Defender received a delegation from the Standing Committee on
Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands on July 8. Chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands in Armenia - Jaap Reichert Todor Frederiks, also participated in
the meeting.
Welcoming
the guests, Anahit Manasyan presented the powers of the Human Rights Defender,
in particular, emphasizing the protection of the rights of women, children,
persons with disabilities, national minorities, civil and socio-economic
rights, the protection of the rights of persons in the armed forces, criminal
proceedings, the works carried out in the framework of the fight against hate
speech, atmosphere of intolerance, discrimination and in a number of other
fields.
Special
attention was paid to issues related to the protection of the rights of persons
forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh, and the fact-finding activities
carried out by the Human Rights Defender personally and her Office, which were
summarized in an ad hoc report and presented to both local and international
partners. In this context, Anahit Manasyan noted that she has been actively
involved in fact-finding activities since the first day, visited with the staff
Kornidzor, Goris and Vayq, held private conversations with forcibly displaced
people, and worked even at nights.
The
issues related to the protection of the rights of residents of the border
communities of Armenia were discussed, and the necessity of guaranteeing human
rights within all processes was highlighted.
Ms.
Anahit Manasyan stressed the importance of ensuring the participation of target
groups in all processes in the field of human rights protection. From this
point of view, a special reference was made to the visits of children, members
of the Children and Youth Rights Council of the Human Rights Defender, to
Geneva and Bratislava, where the latter raised a number of issues related to
their rights and presented their observations on them.
The
interlocutors discussed issues related to the problems currently existing in
our country in the field of guaranteeing equality and combating discrimination.
In this context, the Defender emphasized the importance of the impermissible
volumes of the atmosphere of hate speech, discrimination, intolerance in the
Republic of Armenia today and the importance of the works carried out within
the framework of the fight against it. The importance of guarantees of the
right to freedom of assembly was also discussed from the viewpoint of the
formation of an appropriate human rights protection system.
At
the conclusion of the meeting, the members of the delegation thanked for the
reception and emphasized the role of the Defender in the implementation of the
mission of human rights protection.
