On June 27, the Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan
gave an opening speech at the launch of a training course on equality and
anti-discrimination.
The training is part of the European Union and the
Council of Europe's "Partnership for Good Governance" joint project,
co-financed by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by
the Council of Europe within the framework of the "Promoting equality and
non-discrimination in Armenia" program. It is organized for the representatives
of the Ministry of Interior, the aim is to improve their activities in the
fight against discrimination, hatred and racism in accordance with European
standards.
The Defender highlighted the importance of proper
addressing of issues related to equality and anti-discrimination, since there
are numerous issues registered in the field, including lack of awareness. In
this context, Ms. Manasyan noted that discrimination exists in Armenia on
almost all grounds, as a result of which we can conclude that the sphere of prohibition
of discrimination and equality of rights requires a comprehensive
transformation.
"Within the framework of the annual report of the
Human Rights Defender, I have specifically noted that the representatives of
the state bodies must undergo mandatory, substantive, and very serious
trainings on the mentioned topics. It is imperative that the representatives of
law enforcement and other state bodies have sensitive approaches to different
groups. Its absence can lead to grave problems. In this context, I attach great
importance to the commitment to work together to improve this sector,"
stated the Defender.
Ms. Manasyan specially emphasized that the Council of
Europe is one of the best partners of the Human Rights Defender, and all the
sectoral joint programs have achieved great successes.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ms. Arpine
Sargsyan, the Head of the Office of the Representative for International Legal
Matters Mr. Liparit Drmeyan also gave opening remarks, and the message of Mr.
Maxime Longangué, the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan, was
read.
