As we
reported earlier, based on the information that the arrested Samvel Vardanyan
was beaten by a group of masked persons, on the instructions of the Human
Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan, the Defender's representatives visited the
place of arrest of the Yerevan City Department of the Police of the Ministry of
Internal Affairs of RA.
During
the visit, the Defender's representatives had a private conversation with
Samvel Vardanyan, during which the latter presented details related to the
incident. Taking into account the publications spread in the media, social
networks and the circumstances presented during the private interview, the
Defender started a discussion procedure on her own initiative.
Corresponding
letters will be sent to the General Prosecutor's Office and the Ministry of
Internal Affairs, with the request to make the circumstances of the case the
subject of a detailed and comprehensive investigation.
The
Human Rights Defender emphasizes once again: any manifestation of violence is
highly unacceptable and condemnable. Each case should receive a proper legal
assessment, and the guilty should be held accountable. The state has clear
legal obligations in this regard.
At
the same time, the Defender calls to refrain from using any speech and behavior
promoting hatred, intolerance or violence.
Public
solidarity can be ensured only through a tolerant and sensitive attitude
towards others and respectful dialogue.
Moreover,
public and political figures, representatives of mass media should not only
refrain from using such speech, but also oppose any manifestation of it with
their actions.
