The Human Rights Defender's Office received alerts that a
group of people held in the "Vanadzor" penitentiary of the Ministry
of Justice of RA announced an indefinite hunger strike.
In connection with the above, on the instructions of the
Defender, on February 14, 2024, the representatives of the Human Rights
Defender made an unannounced visit to the "Vanadzor" penitentiary of
the Ministry of Justice of RA, had private conversations with the hunger
strikers, and examined the documents related to their health condition.
Deprived persons raised questions about the necessary
items in the cells, the ventilation system, the lack of prescribed medication,
the quality of drinking water, etc., which, according to them, was the reason
for the hunger strike.
Based on the results of the private interviews,
discussions were also held with the administration of the penitentiary
institution and representatives of the "Vanadzor" division of the
"Hospital for the convicted"
The results of the unannounced visit are summarized,
corresponding letters regarding the recorded problems will be sent to the
competent authorities.
