On
February 7, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan participated in the
second session of the coordinating council of the "Protection of Human
Rights in Biomedicine II" program and made an opening speech.
The
purpose of the event was to discuss issues related to the possible ratification
of the Oviedo Convention, bringing together project partners, actors and
experts, to present the directions and priorities of cooperation. In her
speech, the Defender expressed her gratitude to the partners of the Council of
Europe for the successful launch of the project and noted that the protection
of human rights in the field of health care has a unique role.
"There
is close cooperation between the partners of the Council of Europe and the
Office of the Human Rights Defender in various directions. This program is
another proof of that, because it is being implemented with the initiative and
involvement of the Office of the Human Rights Defender," stated the Defender.
Anahit
Manasyan especially emphasized that the Defender considers the advocacy of
various international legal documents related to human rights as an important
tool for the promotion of human rights.
"The
Oviedo Convention is the document that regulates many important issues related
to human rights. At the same time, before ratifying it, I consider it necessary
to carry out awareness campaigns in order to form a real understanding of the
rights guaranteed by the Convention among the public. I emphasize the role of
journalists in raising awareness, holding training courses for them on this
topic. In this context, I would like to emphasize the necessity of continuing
the training course ‘’HELP training session for journalists on the Key
Principles on Bioethics’’. The implementation of appropriate training courses
for other target groups is also key," stated the Defender.
Anahit
Manasyan reaffirmed her commitment to contribute to the organization and
implementation of the awareness raising process.
At
the same time, the Defender emphasized that the existence and strengthening of
a cooperative environment between international organizations, state bodies and
civil society representatives is key in that process.
