On
February 6, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan received the delegation
led by Laurence Lwoff, Head of Human Rights and Biomedicine Division of Council
of Europe. Maxim Longangue, acting head of the Yerevan office of the Council of
Europe, also participated in the meeting.
Welcoming
the guests, Anahit Manasyan highly appreciated the close cooperation formed
with the Council of Europe. In this context, the parties discussed the details
of the implementation of the human rights protection program in the field of
biomedicine, including the issue of ratification of the Oviedo Convention by
Armenia. Anahit Manasyan noted that before the ratification of the Oviedo
Convention, it is necessary to carry out awareness campaigns in order to form a
real understanding of the rights guaranteed by the Convention among the public.
The Defender emphasized the role of journalists in raising awareness, noting
the importance of holding training courses on this topic for them, which should
be on a continuous basis.
The
project was initiated by the Office of Human Rights Defender and is implemented
in close cooperation with the Council of Europe. The goal is to increase public
awareness of human rights standards in the field of biology and medicine, to
strengthen the abilities of legal experts, doctors, and state bodies in the
field of applying these standards, to ensure the application of the provisions
of the Oviedo Convention in the field of biology and medicine in our country.
Within
the framework of the meeting, the possible directions of cooperation, the
possibility of developing the capacities of the staff of the Human Rights
Defender with the support of the Council of Europe were discussed.
In
his turn, Laurence Lwoff expressed her gratitude to the Defender for the
reception and effective discussion.
At
the end of the meeting, the participants highly appreciated the level of
long-term and effective cooperation between the Defender's Office and the
Council of Europe in the field of human rights protection and outlined
directions for expanding cooperation.
