On
December 1, the Defender participated in the Tbilisi regional conference on
improving the rule of law and access to justice for all and in the panel
discussion organized within the framework of the conference, which was attended
by high-ranking representatives of international organizations, as well as
state bodies and Human Rights Defenders from different countries.
The
goal of the event, organized by the UNDP Georgia office with the support of the
German government, was to assess the regional trends and challenges of the rule
of law in Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, including the protection of
the rights of displaced persons.
Within
the framework of the conference, issues related to the provision of access to
justice for all and the protection of vulnerable communities were discussed,
the experience of the participating countries in the mentioned fields was
presented.
In
her speech, Anahit Manasyan expressed her gratitude to the organizers of the
forum for initiating an important event, pertaining the rule of law and
democratic values. The Defender emphasized that the modern world is today
facing various challenges, which have a direct impact on the system of human
rights protection.
In
this context, she referred to the issues related to the protection of the
rights of people forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh, the fact-finding
activities conducted by her and the staff of the Human Rights Defender's
office, during which information was obtained with regard to the humanitarian
consequences of the blocking of the Lachin Corridor and the Azerbaijani
military intervention resulted in deaths, tortures, disrespect of bodies, mutilations,
ill-treatment of civilians and other cases prohibited by international law.
Anahit
Manasyan also highlighted the issues of human rights protection caused by the
border security of the Republic of Armenia.
The
Defender reached a number of agreements on further cooperation with partners
participating in the regional conference and expressed her willingness to
engage in new initiatives related to the protection of human rights.
Within
the framework of the visit to Tbilisi, high-level meetings and discussions on
the protection of human rights are planned.
