Today,
on September 4, the Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan received Nicholas
Jacob Schermers, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the
Kingdom of the Netherlands, who is completing his diplomatic mission in the
Republic of Armenia. Ambassador/ charge
d'affaires Jaap Frederiks also participated in the meeting.
The
Defender welcomed the guests, expressing her gratitude to the Ambassador
Schermers for his work and invaluable collaboration in advancing human rights
protection during his term of office.
During
the meeting, the Defender presented the violations of the fundamental rights
and freedoms of people as a result of the blocking of the Lachin Corridor by
Azerbaijan. In addition, the Defender referred to the case of the abduction of
a 68-year-old man by Azerbaijan who was being transported to Armenia for
treatment. Anahit Manasyan stated that the illegal interference with Vagif
Khachatryan's rights is a violation of international legal guarantees and
standards. The Defender especially emphasized that such precedents are
continuous, unacceptable and reprehensible.
Questions
regarding the issues of human rights protection caused by the border security
of the Republic of Armenia, as well as issues of the missing servicemen,
Armenian prisoners of war and the guarantee of rights were also discussed.
Within
the framework of the meeting, reference was also made to the work carried out
within the framework of the fight against hate speech, the atmosphere of
intolerance, and discrimination, as well as issues related to the protection of
the rights of national minorities were discussed. The Defender stated that the
above-mentioned issues are in the center of her immediate attention.
Ambassador Nicholas Jacob Schermers thanked
the Defender for the reception and expressed his confidence that cooperation
between Armenia and the Netherlands in the field of human rights protection
will continue to be at a high level.
