Today, the Human
Rights Defender, Ms. Kristinne Grigoryan, hosted the Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of
Armenia, Mr. Nicholas Jacob Schermers.
The Defender greeted
the Ambassador in the Office of the Human Rights Defender and presented the
scope of powers of the Human Rights Defender under the auspices of the
constitutional mandate and high-level public trust in the Defender's
Institute as the best guarantee for the firm implementation of that mission.
In his turn, the
Ambassador expressed gratitude for continuing the cooperation with Ms.
Kristinne Grigoryan within the framework of the Ombudsman's mission, and
highlighting the importance of the Defender's activity, stated that the Human
Rights Defender is one of the five pillars of the state in its country.
At the suggestion of
the Ambassador, Mr. Schermers, the Defender Ms. Grigoryan presented the
Ombudsman institution's priorities.
In particular, the
issues of the secure environment conditioned by human rights, emphasizing that
border security is, first of all, the environment that fully ensures human
rights realization.
Further, Ms. Kristinne
Grigoryan presented to the Ambassador Mr. Schermers the priority issues
concerning prisoners of war, other detained persons, as well as missing persons
and their families due to the post-war situation. She referred to the need to
introduce effective mechanisms to prevent all forms of discrimination, domestic
violence, as well as to exclude hate speech, with the involvement of all
stakeholders, including the media.
The Defender also
stressed the priority of the issues of children with disabilities, considering
them as a force capable of contributing to public life.
With regard to the
presented priorities, the Ambassador presented the Dutch experience of using
multi-party democracy measures to exclude hate speech. Agreements were reached
on finding institutional solutions for the identified problems and within the
framework of possible areas of cooperation with the involvement of experts.
At the end of the
meeting, the parties expressed readiness to deepen cooperation within the framework
of the agreements reached.
