On
September 15, the Human Rights Defender of Armenia Arman Tatoyan received the
delegation led by the Secretary of the Committee on Bioethics of the Council of
Europe, DR. Laurence Lwoff. Mr. Maxime Longangue, Deputy Head of the CoE
Yerevan Office also attended the meeting.
During
the meeting, details related to the program of protection of human rights in
the field of biomedicine were discussed, including the issue of ratification of
the Oviedo Convention by Armenia.
The
aim of the program is to raise public awareness on human rights standards in
the field of biology and medicine, to strengthen the capacity of lawyers,
doctors, government agencies to apply those standards, and to ensure the
application of the provisions of the Oviedo Convention in the field of biology
and medicine in our country.
Mr.
Arman Tatoyan emphasized the importance of close cooperation with the Council
of Europe in the development of the program and stressed that before the
ratification of the Oviedo Convention, it is necessary to carry out awareness
campaigns for people to fully grasp the nature of the convention.
The
Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia emphasized the role of
journalists in raising awareness, also welcoming the HELP training course for
journalists on bioethics.
Current directions of cooperation and
opportunities for expansion within the framework of other programs of the
Council of Europe were also discussed at the meeting.
