The President of Azerbaijan on April 27, 2921 announced: “Geographically, Zangelan is part of Zangezur, it is located in Eastern Zangezur. Western Zangezur [meaning the Syunik region of the Republic of Armenia] is our historical land, the Zangezur corridor will pass through that territory.”
The Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia (RA) deems it obligatory to consider such statements of the President of Azerbaijan while at the same time being mindful of the ongoing Azerbaijani policy of anti-Armenianism, the gross violations of right to life and integrity, property and other rights, and atrocities committed by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in 2020, both during and after the September-November war.
It is evident that these statements cause tension in Armenian society, disrupt the normal life and peace of the civilian population, and aim to intimidate people, especially in border areas.
The registered instances are founded upon citizens’ alerts and complaints to the Armenian Human Rights Defender.
Such statements which are regularly made by the President of Azerbaijan, refer to the sovereign Republic of Armenia, openly distort historical facts, and undermine the prospects for peace and security in the region.
They must receive the necessary response to prevent further escalation of serious and negative consequences for human rights.
