Tim Loughton the head of the UK-Armenia
parliamentary friendship group, representing all parties in the UK Parliament has
applied to the Government of the United Kingdom over the issue of the Armenian prisoners
of war held in Azerbaijan, following the meeting with the Human Rights Defender
of Armenia.
The
meeting that took place last week on March 8 and was attended by the British high
officials has been organized by the Armenian National Committee of the UK
during which Arman Tatoyan has presented in detail the international
humanitarian and human rights rules that require the immediate and safe return
of POWs. He also stated that presenting POWs as “terrorists” by Azerbaijan is
also a gross violation of the international humanitarian law and the POWs’ rights,
as armed conflict was of continuous character.
The
Defender also presented information about war crimes and crimes against
humanity committed by the
Azerbaijani
armed forces during the war of September-November 2020 (beheadings, torture,
humiliation of bodies, etc.).
Referring
to the process of the Armenian border demarcation, Arman Tatoyan presented his
new concept, according to which a demilitarized security zone should be
established in the region of Syunik, to ensure the security of the residents.
He presented concrete evidence, facts, on which this new approach is based on.
On March 11, during the Q&A session in the UK
Parliament, Baroness Caroline Cox, who had previously paid a joint visit to
Artsakh with the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, has raised the issue of
Azerbaijan’s inhuman treatment against the Armenian prisoners of war and the
issue of the banned weapons used by Azerbaijan during the war.
