On December 5, the Human Rights Defender, together with the medical
doctor and lawyers of the Office, obtained new evidence at the National Burn
Center on the use of weapons of mass destruction containing chemical elements
(possibly white phosphorus) in Artsakh by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
The examinations were carried
out by the use of special devices.
The recorded facts substantiate
that assumption.
According to the conclusion of the doctors, the injuries and
swellings of the servicemen (especially in the upper extremities) persist for a
long time, the wounds caused by the burns are deep in some places and have
grey edges: the wounds bleed from time to time and are hard to
treat. Low levels of calcium and hemoglobin in the blood (hypocalcemia),
increase in the size of the liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly) are observed.
According to medical specialists, the entry of substances emitted from the used
weapons to the body through the respiratory tract causes infection to the
internal organs, which may result in long-term deterioration of health and even
death.
According to doctors, the burns of various degrees of persons who
sustained them from the first days of the war differed from the cases they had earlier
encountered in their practice.
During the visit, discussions with the medical personnel and private
interviews with the wounded servicemen, as well as with their family members
took place.
All the above mentioned and other facts have been duly
documented at the Human Rights Defender's Office:
additional professional studies will be carried out and the
necessary steps will be taken based on the results.
These records were formulated also due to the high-quality
professional sampling and diligent documentation of the National Burn Center's
medical personnel.
The joint activities of the Human Rights Defender and the Centers'
management and medical personnel will continue.
