Yesterday, the Office of
the Human Rights Defender received a call via hotline on a case of alleged
torture towards 48-year-old Tigran Karapetyan. The Defender’s Office undertook
all the necessary activities with regard to the complaint. In particular, T.
Karapetyan’s lawyer was contacted, who claimed that his client had been beaten
in the police and subjected to degrading treatment.
In this connection,
yesterday the Human Rights Defender Mr. Arman Tatoyan had a telephone
conversation with RA Chief of Police Mr. Arman Sargsyan. Mr. Sargsyan informed
that he had instructed to check the details and assured, that all the issues were
at the center of his attention. The Chief of Police also informed that criminal
proceedings had been initiated.
According to the Human Rights Defender’s, the issue should be
verified within a criminal proceeding. At the Defender’s instruction, the Defender’s
Office will attentively follow the case.
