The new EU announcement on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly was made at the OSCE high-level conference in Warsaw. On September 17, the United Kingdom published the announcement on behalf of the European Union and its member states.
The EU particularly underlined the positive role played by the Armenian Human Rights Defender and his office in monitoring the peaceful protests earlier this year. “This is an excellent example that shows how independent monitoring can contribute to democracy.” was said in the announcement.
The announcement stressed the importance of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, the important role of national human rights institutions and civil society in this regard, as well as touched upon the EU's concerns over these issues.
