On December 19, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic
of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, hosted students from Dimitrov Secondary School
of the Ararat province. The visit was of a cognitive nature.
Welcoming the guests, the Human Rights Defender presented
the mission of the Human Rights Defender’s Office, the scope of its mandate,
the main directions and priorities of its activities, as well as the
fundamental rights enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
(UNCRC) and the national mechanisms for their protection.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized that the Human Rights
Defender’s Office is an independent and apolitical structure, the main
functions of which are the protection and promotion of human rights. In this
context, the Defender particularly emphasized the role of proper education in
the field of human rights.
“It is very
important that schoolchildren are interested in the field of human rights.
Human rights are about our lives and are an integral part of our lives from the
point of view of values and value systems. Without proper human rights
education, it is impossible to establish an effective system of human rights
protection. Sufficient awareness of rights contributes to the formation of a
tolerant and non-discriminatory environment,” noted Ms. Anahit Manasyan.
Reference was also made to the activities of the Public
Council on Children’s Rights Protection adjunct to the Human Rights Defender.
The meeting was held in a Q&A format, enabling
students to raise their concerns and receive responses directly from the Human
Rights Defender.
In conclusion, Ms. Anahit Manasyan expressed her
gratitude for the active participation and meaningful discussion, emphasizing
the importance of such meetings in identifying existing challenges in the field
of human rights protection and developing joint approaches to addressing them.
Cognitive meetings with students of educational
institutions are ongoing in the Human Rights Defender's Office.
