On April 16, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of
Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, received a delegation led by the Executive
Director of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee Mr. Joeri Buhrer Tavanier. The
meeting was also attended by Mr. Artak Kirakosyan, Director of the Civil
Society Institute Armenia NGO, and Ms. Gayane Hovakimyan, Director of the
Social Justice NGO.
Welcoming the guests, Ms. Anahit Manasyan presented the
scope of the Human Rights Defender's mandate, directions of work, which, among
others, include the rights of women, children, national minorities, persons
with disabilities, hate speech, an atmosphere of intolerance, the fight against
discrimination and other areas, as well as emphasized the importance of
cooperation with civil society organizations.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the project
cooperation implemented in Armenia with the support of the NHC, the role of
civil society organizations in Armenia, problems and opportunities for their
solution, issues related to the protection of the rights of forcibly displaced
persons from Nagorno-Karabakh, current problems and ongoing activities.
Reference was also made to the importance and need for
continuity of training courses, awareness-raising activities, and study visits
on human rights protection.
The problems in the field of protection of the rights of
persons deprived of their liberty were also discussed.
The guests expressed their gratitude for the reception,
highly appreciating the role of the Human Rights Defender’s Office in
implementing its mission of protecting human rights.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their
willingness to continue cooperation in various directions.
