On August 26, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic
of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, met with schoolchildren participating in the
National Assembly’s “Summer School” program. 55 children from Yerevan and
different regions of the Republic of Armenia participated in the meeting.
In
her speech, Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized the importance of such meetings and
underlined the fundamental ideas underlying human rights—tolerance, recognition
of the human being as the highest value, and the safeguarding of human dignity.
"Today we will mainly talk about human rights
problems. I am here not only as a Human Rights Defender, but also as a person
who was quite active in addressing problems of public importance during my
school and student years. During my activities, I have formed a number of
important principles and ideas, including those related to ethical standards,
which I consider guiding in this field," noted the Defender.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan spoke about the challenges in the
field of human rights.
The meeting was held in a Q&A format. Ms. Anahit
Manasyan and Mr. Rustam Bakoyan, acting Chairman of the Standing Committee on
Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs of the National Assembly of the
Republic of Armenia, discussed with the children, inter alia, issues related to
combating discrimination, early and forced marriages, human rights education,
the rights of persons with disabilities, combating domestic violence, freedom
of speech, and other issues.
Reference was made to the protection of the rights of
forcibly displaced persons as well as the activities carried out by the Human
Rights Defender’s Office in this direction.
At the end of the meeting, Ms. Anahit Manasyan expressed
her gratitude for the interesting discussion and expressed her readiness to
host the schoolchildren at the Human Rights Defender’s Office.
