On July 8-10, the Human Rights Defender’s Representative Ms. Vanuhi
Karapetyan participated in the regional conference entitled “Human Rights in
the Armed Forces: Challenges and Opportunities” Chisinau, Moldova.
It was organized in cooperation with the Geneva Centre for
Security Governance (DCAF) and the Partnership for Peace Consortium (PfPC).
The purpose of the conference was to promote the exchange of
best practices in the protection of human rights in the armed forces, security
and accountability in the security sector, as well as strengthening civilian
oversight.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministries of
Defense, ombudsman institutions, as well as civil society organizations from
Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Tajikistan and several other countries.
A number of important topics were discussed, including
conscription procedures, the functioning of military medical commissions, the
use of digital tools for submitting complaints to ombudsman institutions, and
issues related to the role of the armed forces in emergency situations.
This participation underscores the commitment of the Human
Rights Defender and the Office of the Human Rights Defender to promoting
enhanced transparency, the protection of human rights, and institutional
accountability within the armed forces.
