The
Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Ms. Anahit Manasyan paid a
working visit to the Gegharkunik region of the Republic of Armenia.
In
order to make the voices of young people in the region heard, the Human Rights
Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan initiated an event with the participation of the
youth from the enlarged community of Martuni, including students from the
Martuni Regional and State Medical Colleges and students of other schools.
A
number of important topics related to human rights were addressed. Panel
discussions were also held, moderated by college students, who asked questions
to the Human Rights Defender, acting Chairman of the Standing Committee on
Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs of the National Assembly of the Republic
of Armenia and representative of the Yazidi community of Armenia in the
National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, MP Mr. Rustam Bakoyan,
representative of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the
Republic of Armenia, the representatives of the Human Rights Defender’s Office,
and members of the working group of the Public Council on Children’s Rights
Protection adjunct to the Human Rights Defender.
In
her speech, the Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, noted that during
her previous meeting with citizens in Martuni in November 2024, young people
who were also present had raised concerns about the limited opportunities to
exercise their rights in the region, particularly regarding being heard and
participating in various projects.
"At
that time, I promised to support young people within the scope of my mandate,
should they present good ideas and demonstrate initiative. And today, we are
witnessing one of the key outcomes of those very initiatives. Not only the
representatives of state authorities, but also the young people themselves are
key actors in this event. We must be able to ensure the realization of the
rights of young people, including participation, not only in Yerevan, but also
throughout the territory of the republic, with a wide regional spread,
involving all possible settlements," said the Defender.
During
the event, students and schoolchildren raised their concerns to the speakers of
the panel discussions regarding the prohibition of discrimination and the
realization of the right to education.
In
particular, topics such as equality between women and men, the protection of
the rights of national minorities, enhancing the attractiveness and
accessibility of various professions, combining study and work, and other
questions related to ensuring the right to education and the prohibition of
discrimination were discussed.
In
conclusion, the Defender expressed hope that the cooperation would lead to the
implementation of more effective projects.
"Dear
young people, continue to show initiative in the implementation of various
projects, within the scope of our mandate, we will support the realisation of
your ideas," Ms. Anahit Manasyan concluded.
