The
Human Rights Defender Ms. Anahit Manasyan's message on the occasion of Family
Day.
“Dear
citizens,
I
warmly congratulate you on the occasion of Family Day.
In
1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 15th as the
International Day of Families, and in 2011, it was also enshrined in the
legislation of the Republic of Armenia.
The
Constitution of the Republic of Armenia provides for the special protection of
the family, considering its importance in the formation of a prosperous and
harmonious society. At the same time, only family relationships built on mutual
love and respect can ensure the full care and upbringing of children.
In
this context, the mutual assistance and responsibility of all family members,
gender equality in the family, as well as the necessity of ensuring the best
interests of the child, remain a priority.
The
continuation of efforts on the prevention of domestic violence, the improvement
of existing legislation, as well as the development of the capacities of law
enforcement officers and judges in the field of handling such cases, and the
formation and reinforcement of gender-sensitive approaches are also of
paramount importance. In this context, it is important to note that the Human
Rights Defender, within the scope of her mandate, also monitors the activities
of the relevant authorities for the protection of individuals subjected to
domestic violence.
This
annually celebrated day creates a unique opportunity to once again emphasize
the exceptional role of the family in the development of society and the
state”.
